| Gary De Vaul |
ary De Vaul of Ogunquit, Maine, has been to many who regularly visited the CaringBridge website,
a sheer inspiration with his incredibly gifted writing. He exposed us to the inner and outer struggles of Mark's
daily recovery with intellectual prowess and theological illuminations that have ministered to countless people
over the past years. To us he was a spiritual compass and leader. To Mark, Gary was nothing short of an
angel of mercy, in the flesh! He literally clothed and fed Mark as he regained his strength after the accident.
He prepared endless 'Chef DeVaul' meals, not only delighting the palate of the patient, but all of Mark's guests that
journeyed to Ogunquit to wish him well! Gary was innkeeper, best friend, chef, and spiritual mentor.
On Christmas Eve 2003, Gary was told by his doctor that he was suffering from a very rare form of
cancer, multiple myeloma. Shortly after the holidays, Gary began treatment. He was extremely ill, so much so that treatment had
to stop so he could regain his strength. Through God's grace and your prayers, Gary was able
to restart the treatment for the cancer.
Due to the outpouring of support from Gary's readers, The Mark Thallander Trust published Gary's devotional
thoughts. Details of how you may secure your copy of CHAMPIONS are found on the 'contact' page of this site.
Gary flew to California to be part of the Choral Festival on February 26, 2006. That morning Gary's heart stopped. The shocking news of his death was announced at the Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels. The Festival, featuring over 1,000 choir members, was dedicated in memory of Gary and in celebration of his life. Memorial services were held at The Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, California, and at the Ogunquit Baptist Church in Ogunquit, Maine.
